FA Confirms Solidarity
The Football Association (FA) have condemned the activities of Russia against Ukraine and have confirmed that both England and Wales will no longer compete against them.
Their decision comes immediately after FIFA ordered Russia to compete under a new name, the ‘Football Union of Russia’, whilst also banning the nation from using their national flag and anthem.
We are first likely to see this decision to to the test in this year’s Women’s Euros; if the nations are seeded against one another. The FA’s ruling could still apply in the next few months, for the Winter World Cup, which is to be held in Qatar, but this is dependent the circumstances between Russia and Ukraine seeing some kind of improvement.
It is unknown if there are any penalties for both England and Wales refusing to play Russia. However, it is very unlikely with the world currently being unanimous in it’s condemnation of Russia and their actions; which has been deemed “inconceivable” by Prime Minster Boris Johnson via Sky Sports.
There is a chance that Russia could be completely banned from the FIFA World Cup,
