First Half Flurry Sees United Out

In an epic derby to progress through the quarter-finals of the FA Women’s Super League, Manchester United suffered a second-half blitz from their rivals, Manchester City.

United started off strong, with Katie Zelem opening the scoring just 2 minutes before the 15-minute mark. An exquisite delivery from the corner spot saw Zelem whip the ball directly beyond Ellie Roebuck.

Despite corner kicks dominating the best opportunities for both teams in the first half, City’s clever play down the right-hand side in the second saw goals from Lauren Hemp and Ellen White to put them 2-1 up.

City continued their pressure but this time on the left, where more wing play was at the heart of Manchester City’s next two goals. A cut back from Weir caught United’s Mary Earps off guard with a near-post strike she failed to deal with. Similarly, substitute Khadija Shaw managed to find herself with a tap in after a strike that led to the first goal, rebounded of Earps to leave United’s goal wide open.
