Ireland sit second place in Group I standings

The similarities between Germany’s victory, to Spain’s over Moldova, in their qualifying games for the UEFA Women’s European Championship 2022 is uncanny.

Their dominance in possession (77%) is one of the key stats, with their total number of passes at 721 being three times more than the Republic of Ireland’s, who managed 231 passes; whilst retaining 23% of possession.

All of the goals came in the first half and Germany did not take long to get their first.

The scoring began the scoring when Bayern Munich defender, Marina Hegering, put them in the lead after 8 minutes of gameplay. The Republic of Ireland did their best to hold on but Dzsenifer Marozsán, of Olympique Lyonnais, followed up the  German’s scoring by adding goal number 2 to the scoreboard 30 minutes later. The final goal came from Lea Schüller, also of Bayer Munich, only three minutes after Marozsán doubled their lead.

It can be said that the first goal did much to damage the confidence of Ireland; especially since their confidence would have been very high from being the leaders in the table up until this game.

Currently, the Republic of Ireland is playing for their seeding. They are, along with Germany, more than 10 points ahead of third and fourth place, Greece and Ukraine; whilst Montenegro is yet to win a game.

Despite having 28 attempts on goal, only 8 were on target.
