Chelsea Skipper Receives Rape and Death Threats Online
Carney’s winning penalty, as Chelsea beat Fiorentina 1-0 in the Champions League, sent a social media user into hysteria on Thursday. This first leg win in the last 16, led to the England midfielder receiving three threatening messages via. Instagram, one of which, the user dzo99, sent to Carney at 9:22 pm:
“How many chances you need to score in second half stupid b——“, “I wish you cancer and leukemia” and “I hope someone will rape you to death”.
Carney, appalled by the abuse, then re-posted the comments on her Instagram saying, “Wow some people”, signaling that this type of behavior is intolerable. Supporting this view is a fellow sportsman, European Champion Sprinter Martyn Rooney, and sportswomen i.e. England’s Rugby World Cup Winner Rachael Burford have shown their support to Carney, identifying the long-lasting impact it can have on the athlete.
Chelsea & the FA have reported the matter to the police.
